What Is Mental Wellness?
What is mental wellness? To be honest, it’s defined in many ways. Mental wellness is a balance of many things that you need to take notice within yourself.
Even though this “popular” term is used in various ways, it’s mostly served in the more up and coming holistic health field.
According to the American Mental Wellness Association, the word mental wellness is defined as “…a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”
Why Is Mental Wellness Important?
Well, why is mental wellness important? It’s all about you and how you function in your environment. If something stressful happens to you, how would you react to it? Would you face the stress or run away from it?
What about your body? Are you taking care of it so that you can function well at work or out and about? What you eat, how you sleep, and even a decent exercise presents a great deal into your mental wellness.
Overall, mental wellness is important because it helps you function well with yourself and your environment. From eating the right foods, making decisions that can either harm or add value to your life is essential to living well in general.
How Do You Achieve Mental Wellness?
Achieving mental wellness is not difficult. However, it does require a bit of building good habits and removing bad ones. It also requires being self-aware of things that are either good or bad for you.
So how do you really achieve mental wellness? It’s all about your sense of purpose. How do you want to live? Happy and Adventurous? What values do you live by in your life? Servitude or Creative? Everyone has a way to achieve their mental wellness because it all requires some type of balance in your life.
So how can you improve your mental wellness? I’m going to give you 10 simple general ways to improve your mental wellness. You can even start today!

Walk Away From The Television Screen
That television show tho…
As much as there are so many television shows out there to watch, and they’re fun and interesting to watch, it’s not really beneficial to our health. Side effects of watching too many television can lead to headaches, weight gain, and can even lead to cancer. So why don’t you, including myself, get away from the screen awhile? That also goes with our small electronics like our phones, tablets, and other portable screen devices. Let’s all take 1 hour and just clear our minds sometimes, and/or substitute your television screen with the following activities listed along this post.
Take Breaks From Social Media
They say you can never have too much of a good thing. I don’t believe that. Social media, for example, thought it is neither a good or bad thing, can be used in a good or bad way. It can be used for good in delivering news to people, but it can also be a place that puts others in a mindset that causes depressions, desires, and sometimes jealousy.
There have been numerous times when I found myself depressed or sad at the fact of other people’s lives when I browsing social media, especially Instagram. I mean look at these people’s lives, right?! But I know that I can’t look at people in a way that is envious but in a way that is happy for them. However, if the person I followed made me feel negative, it’s best not to follow them. In the end, it wasn’t their fault that I was experiencing negative feelings, it was my desire of their life or lifestyle that left me sad and sometimes ungrateful.
If you’ve found yourself on social media and coming off of it sad, depressed, or just experiencing negative feelings, then you need to take a break from it. Numerous studies have shown that social media, if not used properly, can cause all sorts of negative emotions, particularly depression.
At the end of the day, social media should be about building a community, but I’m not going to get into the soap bubble here. To improve your mental wellness you need to be taking breaks from social media and actually enjoy YOUR life. Create your own enjoyment and thrive in your life. It’s the only way to live after all.
Get Plenty Of Sleep
Sleep is the most important routine we all should do, especially when it requires us to sleep a certain amount of sleep. Though the requirement is 8 hours of sleep, our bodies are different in the number of hours we sleep. Some people can sleep for 6 hours and they wake up just fine. As for me, I love my eight hours of sleep just fine, and I will keep it that.
If, for some reason, you can’t get your body regular hour of sleep, take some time during the weekend to get your sleep in. The less you sleep, the more you’ll notice how you’ll feel throughout the day, including your body.
Praise God Through the Circumstances
Sometimes life gets us down. That’s when we should be looking up, to God of course. This was something that I didn’t understand because if I was down, how can praising make me happy? Realized that God is the God who is in everything. He is the comforter, the provider, the supplier, and more.
“Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.” – Psalm 100:4 NIV
So even through circumstances, I praise God because He is still present. He knows what’s going on and He is still there for me. He is the only one that can help us focus our minds on the good things such as His promises, who He is, and what He says He will do.
Keep A Gratitude Journal
Recording your thoughts in your journal holds great benefits, especially if it is a gratitude journal. Keep a journal on you either at home or when you’re out and about. Then, every day, or weekly, write down 3-5 things that you’re grateful for.
Whatever good thing that has happened to you at the time, and the things that are still keeping you moving forward in life, take notes of those experiences, and explain why you’re grateful or them.

Pay Attention To What You Are Eating
What you eat has a big influence on your mental wellness. Not only can eating unhealthy foods affect your body, but they also disrupt your sleep, lower your energy, change your mood (and not into a pleasant feeling), drive your hormones out of balance, and lower your immune system.
Also, it can leave you feeling lazy, sad, and confused. Focus on eating healthy foods, including those high in vitamins and minerals as well as healthy fats, which your brain needs.
Apply Mindfulness Into Your Lifestyle
Mindfulness is the practice of being self-aware of yourself- in your thoughts, your body, and your environment, without judgment. To apply mindfulness, it’s actually simple but does take practice if you apply it to your life every day. I mentioned how taking a break from social media can be good for your mental wellness.
But what if you could catch your emotions or reaction when you watch or see something that might cause you to feel sad?
The next time you’re on social media after you take your break and you’re ready to be on it, carefully observe yourself when you’re scrolling through your social media. Be aware of how specific images makes you feel on your body. Do you tense? Does your hand feel warm? Do you feel warm? Where does your eye look to specifically? What’s does your mind think of when you’re observing these images? Be mindful of these things when you get on social media. You might be surprised by what you might find out about yourself. Not specifically what you’re missing in life, but more so how you act.
On the other hand, mindfulness can be a great way to calm you down as well. There are a lot of youtube videos that provides meditation practices. If you’re not into that, then a simple 2-minute breathing exercise, by being aware of your breathing and your body can also simply improve your mental wellness.
Mindfulness practice can also be used while you walk outside, observe your surroundings and so many more. This practice is all about paying attention to things, without judgment of course. Just observe it and let it go. Simple as that.
Imagine Your Ideal Vacation
Sometimes, a mental vacation can be just as beneficial as the real kind, without having to pack a bag. Imagine your perfect holiday and how it would make you feel if you went there. You can even trip a future vacation while you’re at it.
Check your ideal vacation on Google and look through the images, letting your imagination run a bit wild. This type of mental exercise calms you and reduces your anxiety, which can help you cope with stressful circumstances.

Get Active & Keep Moving
Exercising has a lot of benefits to the body and the brain. As you work out, your blood continuously pumps while reducing your stress levels. Also, getting exercise outdoors has the benefit of also exposing your skin to the sun, which can make vitamin D, which is crucial to your mental wellness.
Dance To Your Favorite Song
This is one of my favorite activities while I’m in the car or at home. It makes me happy, excited, and sweat (haha). I enjoy every moment when I put up an upbeat song that can just make my day a bit better. You can dance to your favorite upbeat music while cooking, doing chores, or even when you’re getting dressed up in the morning. Your outlook of the day will be positive.
Read A Book
Escape your stressful life with your favorite book genre. Reading is a great way to decompress and keep your mind active (on something interesting) while taking time for yourself. When someone hurts you, it can be hard to look at them and even forgive them. I’ve gone through situations like this before and the only thing that made me better and satisfied with life was to just forgive. If I didn’t forgive, it’s like having a boulder on your shoulder.
You’re living life, but you’re not truly happy with life because of this boulder. Let go of what that person has done, or even yourself. When you do this, you will feel a lot better. In the end, it’s not about that person anymore, but about how you choose to live your life.
