“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” ~ Helen Keller

1. Reading Motivational Books:
One day I went to Barnes and Nobles thinking that I was going to buy 1 book.
I ended up buying 11 books.
Why? I don’t know to be honest. But one thing that all the books that I’ve bought have in common is that they have the mean to motivate me to be the best that I can be.
I have two books that I am currently reading right now, and one of them that I’ve written about recently: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey and Crushing It! by Gary Vaynerchuk.
The second book is about not giving up on your dreams while the first book is developing habits that you want to have that are good and influential in your life.
These two books have helped me understand that even if you’re going through something, you have the choice to either see it in a bad or turning it into a good mode of thought/action.
As a Christian, I read my bible (or listen to it) to gain encouragement for the day. I make it a habit to engage with it daily so I can start my day right. Plus, the words that I read in the morning traverse throughout the day, so even if I see a wrong in the day, my mind is in the right.
So books have been my motivation when I need to be encouraged.
2. Crying It Out
I guess you can say I am a bit sensitive. Even an animal being hurt on the road makes me tear a bit. I can’t help it. It’s an injustice crime. Sometimes, I feel like that about life. Maybe I still not fully mature to understand things, but when things are even just a little bad, it hurts. You expect life to always be a rainbow appearing ever so in your life, but sometimes,
So yes, I cry. Why? It helps me get my emotions out. I feel better doing. How does this help me remain positive? For every rain, there’s always sunshine.
3. Acknowledge The Situation But Know That It’s Temporary
I’ve learned that every season is temporary. From my embarrassment as a young child to being bullied, to even just not getting accepted to the college I wanted to go to, I’ve learned that life is grand, it’s full of unexpected things, but God knows how to weave them all together for HIS glory, but also for my good. And I’ve seen good things happen in my life.
When I think to encounter something that I did not expect, I remind myself that it happened, but that does not mean it’s there for the long haul.
4. Eat Ice Cream & Watch A Movie/TV Show
This is a temporary fix, but it’s my favorite way to pass time. I eat my favorite ice while watching a movie I may or may not have watched. One of my favorite movies/TV Show is watching Once Upon A Time. It’s been my favorite show to watch on HULU. It’s a Disney “Reality” Drama show. I would recommend it if you’re into Disney. Another one would be Brooklyn
5. Listening to Inspiring Podcast:
Two people that I listen to when I get frustrated about life and wondering where God wants to me to be are Bishop TD Jakes and Pastor Ron Carpenter. They have a Christian podcast that I like listening to when I need to be encouraged more and more, which leads me to be more positive.
As a Christian, prayer has grown to be my refuge. When things do not go my way, I get to prayer. Sometimes, it may be hard for me to pray about certain things, but in the end, when I do end up praying, it does feel like a weight been lifted off my shoulders.
Philippians 4:6-7 NIV states that if you’re anxious about anything, go to God in prayer. In turn, the peace of God will guard your mind and hearts in Jesus Christ. The peace of God will help you lean on Christ because He knows what you’re going through, and He alone can help you overcome just that.
7. Thinking Positive Thoughts
Now, this is something I am practicing every day because I am known to be negative at times. I’ve gotten better at it and I’m moving myself to ponder on good things.
Philippians 4:8 NIV states whatever is right, pure, lovely, and anything along those lines, our thoughts should be on those things.
Now I am not saying that I don’t see things as they are because I do. I can’t ignore my reality while I try to ponder on something good. I first acknowledge my reality, understand it, but then remain positive because it’s the one way that I maintain positive and know that my situation is not permanent.
If you can’t change your situation, change your thoughts.
My thoughts, then, are about the good things that are in my life, what I’m grateful for and the likes.
8. Listening to Upbeat Songs
Ever since I was little, music always made me happy in some sort of fashion. Since I am in the choirs at my church singing to God always lifts my voice and heart to Him, helping me not think of my situation but to think of Him.
Don’t tell God how big your mountain is, tell your mountain how big your God is!
From R&B to Gospel, I listen to all. Now if it’s a song that I can dance to then it’s on!
Music is really the best way I get out of my funk.
Now you may think to yourself, how does music help you stay positive?
It’s actually pretty simple. Think about it: when you listen to music, especially if it’s upbeat, you’re likely to be positive and ponder on how the song makes you happy. It gears your focus towards things that help you be positive and happy at the moment.
There you go!
I listed 5 things that I used to help me be positive, even if it is for a moment. With books, I use them to uplift me and help me to see things the way I choose to see them.
With the podcast, I use it as an additional motivation tool to uplift me by listening to uplifting people.
Third, prayer is one of the ways that leads my thoughts to God when my situations seem impossible. Fourth, when it seems that my situation is not going to change anytime soon, I still encourage my thoughts to be more positive.
And lastly, music is my great go to when I’m in the mood to dance, which helps me be happy and also stay positive.
